About
This short documentary explores the evolution of Manchester’s music scene—its rich history, current influence, and where it’s heading in the future. Created as part of the Co-Labs Showcase Event, this project highlights the cultural significance of Manchester’s music venues, artists, and communities through a mix of interviews, archival footage, and stylized animations. The documentary focuses on the themes of Storytelling and Society, capturing perspectives from both older and younger generations to provide a well-rounded look at how music shapes identity and culture in the city.
Challange
One of the biggest challenges was coordinating interviews and maintaining anonymity, as we had to ensure ethical filming practices while still making the documentary engaging. Another obstacle was technical difficulties with camera positioning—specifically aligning animated overlays with real-life interview footage. This required creative solutions in post-production, including manual positioning and frame-by-frame adjustments. Additionally, balancing the sound mix to seamlessly integrate local Manchester music with interviews posed a challenge in ensuring clarity and smooth transitions.
Result
The final documentary successfully captures the spirit of Manchester’s music scene, blending real-life footage, personal insights, and animated elements to create a visually engaging and informative piece. The project not only expanded my skills in video editing, graphic design, and sound mixing, but also gave me firsthand experience in creating a structured, team-driven documentary. By showcasing our work at the Co-Labs Showcase Event, we were able to gather valuable feedback and see the real-world impact of our storytelling.
